Late Wednesday evening, the Delhi-Kamakhya North East Express train derailment in Buxar, Bihar, resulting in the deaths of at least four passengers.

A Railway Police Force official reported that seventy additional individuals were injured subsequent to the derailed train of six carriages near the Raghunathpur station. The Railways granted Rs 10 lakh ex gratia to the relatives of those slain in the train derailment on Thursday. It was also stated that Rs 50,000 would be provided to those injured.

As the train derailed, visuals revealed that at least two AC III Tier coaches had collapsed over and four others had leapt the tracks.

Upon witnessing the incident, members of the community raced to the passengers’ aid and assisted them in egressing the derailed coaches. Additionally, ambulances and a number of police officers responded to the location after being informed of the accident.

Visuals captured on Thursday morning indicated that demolition of the derailed train from the rails was in progress.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw conveyed condolences for the loss of life on X, adding that all carriages had been inspected and evacuation and rescue operations had been concluded. The minister further stated that an investigation would be conducted into the derailment’s fundamental cause.

BIHAR TRAIN DERAILMENT: SO FAR DEVELOPMENTS

1.The derailment occurred at 7:40 a.m. on Wednesday, after the 23-coach 12506 North East Express departed the Anand Vihar terminal in Delhi for its approximately 33-hour journey to Kamakhya, located six kilometers from Guwahati. According to Birendra Kumar, the Chief Public Relations Officer for the East Central Railway zone, the accident occurred at approximately 9:53 pm, which is less than thirty minutes after the train departed the Buxar station on its journey to Ara, as reported by the PTI.

2.For the purpose of surveillance and early restoration of the coaches, war rooms were established, a railway official told PTI.

Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his condolences to the bereaved families via X. Additionally, he verified that a relief train intended to transport the derailed train’s stranded passengers had already departed.

In the aftermath of the incident, Tejashwi Yadav, the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, issued a statement requesting the health and disaster management departments to expedite the distribution of aid to the greatest number of individuals possible. Additionally, Yadav disclosed that he had communicated with the district magistrates of Buxar and Bhojpur.

3.When asked about the cause of the train derailment, Tarun Prakash, AGM of East Central Railway, informed PTI that investigations were in progress and that details regarding the incident’s origin would be disclosed in the near future.

Rajiv Chandra Singh (SDPO, Jagdishpur) stated that the technical staff alone was capable of providing information regarding the accident’s cause.
