What should be done when frequent concerns about the danger posed by stray dogs fail to elicit any action from the authorities? A group of people living in Pallavaram came up with an interesting concept: they decided to hold a “barking protest” in front of the Corporation office.
Residents of Chennai’s Chrompet staged a unique form of protest against the stray dog menace in the city by making barking sounds. They further went on to submit a petition to the authorities but there was no one to receive it. The protesters at the Tambaram Corporation office.
Relatively recently, a girl who was in the eleventh grade and was on her way home from school sustained injuries when she fell down while attempting to escape from stray dogs in Chromepet. Residents claimed that this was merely the most recent in a string of dog attacks, and they also claimed that people in all of the communities within the Tambaram Corporation, including Chromepet, Pallavaram, Hastinapuram, Pammal, Anakaputhur, Selaiyur, and Perungalathur, have been experiencing the same problem.
“We asked the Corporation to take action to curb stray dogs, but our requests were ignored on every occasion.” V Santhanam, a social activist, said that a group of protesters gathered in front of the zonal office on Tuesday and voiced their disapproval by barking at the building. When the stray dogs also started barking, it added even more tension to the situation and drew the attention of people walking by.
They were unable to present the petition to a senior official when they went to the zonal office to do so because there was no one of that rank available. As a result, they maintained it close to the flagpole and thereafter staged the demonstration.
