Hong Kong: China’s population fell by 850,000 last year, the first drop in six decades, signalling a long-term decline with enormous economic implications.
Demographic catastrophe facts are below.
ONE-CHILD POLICY
-From 1980 until 2015, China had a one-child policy due to government worries about the social and economic effects of fast population increase.
– Violators were penalised and forced to get abortions under the one-child policy. Due to historical and cultural preferences for boys, numerous gender selective abortions occurred.
-China claims the measure prevented 400 million births.
-From 2016, all married couples could have a second child.
-Beijing allowed three children in 2021.
INCENTIVES
The one-child policy, high schooling costs, and limited daycare choices have deterred many Chinese from having more than one child or any at all.
Since 2021, local governments have offered tax rebates, maternity leave, and housing assistance to increase births.
Beijing also prohibited private tutors from profiting from teaching essential subjects on weekends and holidays that year. Industry costs were outrageous.
