Darbhanga:The Centre has again objected to the proposed site for the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Shobhan, threatening Darbhanga AIIMS. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar criticized the Central government for rejecting ideas, sparking a political fight. “AIIMS’ Darbhanga site is fine,” the Bihar CM said. The site can reveal the truth.”
“Earlier, Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) was supposed to be upgraded, but this proposal of the state government was rejected by the Centre,” Nitish Kumar said, criticizing the Modi-led government for rejecting state recommendations. AIIMS was then proposed for DMCH. Another difficulty arose. The district magistrate showed me Shobhan Bypass land in Darbhanga. Site connectivity impressed me. The Centre has issues. The Centre may have other plans.”
Why Centre Has A Problem With Shobhan As The Proposed Site For AIIMS Darbhanga?
The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare wrote that the proposed land for AIIMS at Darbhanga is low-lying and requires more than 10 meters of earth filling. The Union Government believes covering 151 acres of land with suitable soil is difficult and could increase project costs and postpone development. The letter mentioned waterlogging.
‘BJP Politicising The Issue’: Bihar Govt
The ruling JD(U) and RJD accused the BJP of politicizing and delaying the project. “With great effort, the CM decided to allot 189 acres of land for AIIMS near Shobhan for free,” JD(U) state spokesperson and MLA Ajay Chaudhary said, challenging Centre objections. The proposed land is only 5km from Darbhanga-Amas four-lane road. Doctors and patients could easily reach the spot.”
RJD accused the Centre of “unnecessary controversy”. RJD state spokesperson Chitranjan Gagan remarked, “BJP does not want Bihar to get another AIIMS.”

The state BJP defended the Centre’s decision and criticized Bihar CM for choosing a “faulty site” for AIIMS Darbhanga. “The Centre does not want another structure to collapse in the state,” claimed BJP state president Samrat Choudhary, criticizing the Bihar CM. Nitish first declared DMCH would become AIIMS. He targeted land on the former Ashok Paper Mill complex. The CM chose low-lying Shobhan land.”
