Darshan Solanki suicide case: Father requests police “harassment” action from Maharashtra CM

The father of Darshan Solanki, who committed suicide last month, wrote to Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister-Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and Mumbai Police Commissioner Vijay Phansalkar alleging police harassment for filing a FIR into his son’s death.

Wednesday, the father of Darshan Solanki, who committed suicide last month, wrote to Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister-Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and Mumbai Police Commissioner Vijay Phansalkar, alleging that his family is being harassed by the police for filing a FIR into his son’s death.

In addition, Darshan Solanki’s father, Ramesh Solanki, requested that action be taken against the police.

The 18-year-old is believed to have committed suicide at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay in Mumbai by leaping from the seventh floor of a hostel building on campus on February 12, a day after his semester exams concluded.

The Powai police filed an Accidental Death Report (ADR) and initiated an investigation into the incident.

Solanki was a native of Ahmedabad and a B Tech student at IIT Bombay in Mumbai.

As soon as the police received word of the suicide, they rushed to the scene and pronounced him deceased at the hospital.

Solanki’s family had previously alleged foul play in his death and claimed he was subjected to discrimination at the IITB because he belonged to the Scheduled Caste (SC) community.

On February 28, the case was transferred to the city crime branch’s SIT in response to his parents’ demands for a thorough investigation.

On March 3, however, the SIT discovered a “suicide note” in Darshan Solanki’s dorm room in which he accused a fellow student of harassing and threatening him.

The Special Investigations Team (SIT) of the Mumbai Police Department discovered a suicide note in which the deceased (18-year-old IIT Bombay student) accused another student of harassing and menacing him.

Police will interrogate the students whose names appear in the suicide note, the Mumbai Police Department said.
