New Everton manager Sean Dyche could not have taken on a greater challenge than answering the ailing Merseyside club’s emergency call as he resumes his managing career with a team that appears to be spiralling towards the second rung of English football.
The 51-year-old Dyche was accustomed to beating the odds at unfashionable Burnley, where he earned a reputation as a shrewd manager and motivator who extracted every ounce of potential from his players over the course of six complete Premier League seasons.

Everton likely chose him as a saviour from relegation or a manager capable of leading them back to the Premier League if the worst should occur and the club is relegated for the first time.
Dyche, Everton’s fifth manager in five years, begins what some are calling a mission impossible on Saturday, with the league’s top team, Arsenal, visiting Goodison Park for a noon kickoff.
With nine losses and one victory in its last 12 league games under former manager Frank Lampard and growing displeasure with the club’s management, only the most optimistic fan will believe Everton can hand Arsenal only its second league loss of the season.
A transfer window that saw record expenditure in the Premier League completely passed Everton by, adding yet another layer of misery to the blue side of Merseyside.
While relegation rivals such as Bournemouth (£50 million), Leeds United (£36 million), and Southampton (£56 million) strengthened their rosters with fresh additions, Everton spent nothing despite losing teenage winger Anthony Gordon to Newcastle United for reportedly £40 million.
It means Dyche will have to make due with a squad that appears poorly equipped for a battle of survival.

Dyche, whose new team is second-last with 15 points from 20 games – above Southampton on goal differential and two points above the relegation zone – stated, “It’s a difficult situation, but we want to restore a sense of optimism.”
“In quiet waters, anyone may take the helm, but we are not in calm waters. “What I can say is that we will field a fighting team that will wear the insignia with pride,” he continued.
Everton’s sole solace is that it has won three of its last four Premier League games against Arsenal, albeit against a completely different Gunners team than this year’s.
Arsenal, led by former Everton player Mikel Arteta, is the favourite to win the league title for the first time since 2003-04. With a victory on Saturday, Arsenal can open up an eight-point lead over Manchester City.
Both Chelsea midfielder Jorginho and Brighton & Hove Albion winger Leandro Trossard were acquired by the north London club during the January transfer window, and both could play on Saturday.
