Gmail’s founder says that Chat GPT
Paul Buccheit, who made Gmail, thinks that Chat GPT could destroy Google in a year or two at the most. Buccheit thinks that ChatGPT will kill Google’s most profitable product, which is Search, and that even if the world’s largest search engine catches up on AI, it won’t be able to fully use it without destroying the most valuable part of its business.
Since its release in November 2022, when it was called Chat GPT, the Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer from OpenAI has been the talk of the town. It’s basically a test version of an AI-powered chatbot that can read and respond to text messages. The real kicker, though, is that it’s made to talk naturally, which has long been seen as Google’s strong suit. So far, the results have been amazing, even surreal, which has led to a meteoric rise in use around the world and given OpenAI enough confidence to now also look into a paid version.
Google may be only a year or two away from total disruption. AI will eliminate the Search Engine Result Page, which is where they make most of their money.

The rise and popularity of the chatbot have, of course, set off alarm bells in Mountain View. According to reports, CEO Sundar Pichai has issued a “code red” and asked Larry Page and Sergey Brin to help speed up Google’s AI projects. The New York Times recently said that Google plans to “demonstrate a version of its search engine with chatbot features this year” and is making more than 20 AI products to “counter” Chat GPT. At the upcoming Google I/O 2023 developer conference, more information is likely to be shared.
“Google could be completely changed in a year or two. “AI will kill the Search Engine Result Page, which is where they make most of their money,” wrote Buccheit on Twitter. “Even if they catch up to AI, they can’t fully use it without destroying the most valuable part of their business!”

Chat GPT is based on GPT-3.5, a large language model that uses both supervised and unsupervised deep learning techniques to give you detailed and well-written answers to questions from a wide range of domains. At its core, ChatGPT is made for conversations and interactions that are like those between people. However, it can do a lot more, from writing and fixing complicated computer programmes to writing poetry. Its predecessor could only use text prompts and send back its own text, but ChatGPT or GPT 3.5 is more interesting.
But it has some problems as well. OpenAI has said in public that ChatGPT can sometimes write answers that sound right but are wrong or don’t make sense. It doesn’t seem to know much about what has happened since 2021, and it is prone to making mistakes and having biases.
