Graham Reid Steps Down As Indian Men's Hockey Team Coach After World Cup Debacle

Graham Reid, the head coach of the Indian men’s hockey team, tendered his resignation after the team’s disastrous performance at the World Cup.

As a result of India’s disappointing performance in the just finished 2023 Hockey World Cup, Graham Reid has resigned from his position as the head coach of the Indian men’s hockey team. After India’s disappointing ninth-place finish, it has been learned that Reid, a former Australian midfielder who took over in 2019 and played a key role in the team’s victory of a bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics 2021, has submitted his resignation to Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey. Reid took over in 2019, and played a key role in the team’s victory.

“My tenure here has come to an end, and it is time for me to stand down and turn over the reins to the new administration. Working with Hockey India and the team has been not only a pleasure but also an honour, and I have cherished each and every step of this momentous journey. I want to send the squad my warmest wishes for success “Graham Reid stated.
In addition to winning a historic medal at the Olympics, Reid and his team of support staff led India to a fantastic finish at the Commonwealth Games last year, where they won the silver medal. They also led India to a fine showing at the 2021/22 FIH Hockey Pro League season, where they finished in third place. But all of India’s efforts were for naught during the World Cup, as the country that was hosting the tournament was eliminated before even reaching the quarterfinals. They were victorious over Spain by a score of 2-0, while they were lost by Wales by a score of 4-2. Because of this, India was forced to compete against New Zealand in a crossover match, and despite putting up a valiant effort, they were ultimately unsuccessful and lost in the sudden death round after the game ended 3-3 in regulation time.

After India was eliminated from the World Cup in a startling fashion, Reid did not comment on his future with the team; nevertheless, the suspense was resolved when he tendered his retirement, and Tirkey paid thanks to the veteran coach for his enormous contribution.
“Graham Reid and the rest of his support crew have given many positive results to the country of India, most notably at the Olympic Games. For this, India will be eternally grateful to Graham Reid and his team. It is time for us to transition towards a new strategy for our team as we have reached a new phase in our journey, just as all trips progress through a series of progressively more complex stages.”
