Geologists say the Himalayas are not as reliable as people think. They said this on Friday, as the operation to save people in the Uttarkashi tunnel continued to overcome new problems at the last minute. Vishal Chauhan, a member (admin) of the National Highways Authority of India, told a news conference about the progress of the rescue work. He said that Himalayan geology is unpredictable and that many problems came up, despite the best efforts of all the government and private agencies.
“Jammu and Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh are the places where the most tunnel building is happening.” Himachal has done some great tunneling work, like the Atal tunnel. We are always learning from our mistakes. What happened in Uttarkashi was a bad thing. The geology of the Himalayas is still not a perfect science, but it’s getting better every day. We don’t have an accident every year or every two years. It’s been years since I heard of an event like this.

Now, the NDMA member said, a ground-penetrating radar has shown that there are no metal barriers up to five meters in front of the auger machine. “Don’t guess when the rescue operation will be over,” the NDMA member said.
