India’s Foreign Minister S Jaishankar is on two countries tour to Maldives and Sri Lanka. During this, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabri has expressed his gratitude to PM Modi. Apart from this, former Sri Lankan cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya has also thanked Jaishankar.
Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabri said, “It is no exaggeration to say that we were able to be financially stable because of the huge credit loan we got from India for importing essential goods. I express my gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”
Sri Lanka is facing severe economic crisis from the beginning of 2022. India had provided financial assistance of about $ 4 billion to Sri Lanka in difficult times last year. Apart from this, India had also given a loan of US $ 900 million to Sri Lanka.
Meeting with the President of Sri Lanka
S Jaishankar reached Sri Lanka on Thursday after visiting the Maldives during an official visit to the two countries. Here he met the top leadership including President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Apart from this, he discussed matters related to mutual and regional interests with the Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Ali Sabri said that financial assistance of about $ 4 billion from India in the form of credits for the import of essential goods has brought some stability to the country.
India always with Sri Lanka
India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar tweeted, “Had a good meeting with Foreign Minister Ali Sabri and other ministerial colleagues in Colombo this evening. Discussed infrastructure, connectivity, energy, industry and health cooperation. A meeting is also scheduled between S Jaishankar and Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardene.
Earlier, the Ministry of External Affairs had said that Sri Lanka is India’s neighbor and a close friend. India always stands with the people of Sri Lanka.
Former cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya thanked Jaishankar
Former Sri Lankan cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya thanked Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar for promoting tourism in Sri Lanka. Jayasuriya tweeted, “Thanks to the External Affairs Minister of India for encouraging Indian tourists to visit Sri Lanka. Hope to work together in the future.”
Speaking to the press in Colombo, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had said that tourism is the lifeblood of the Sri Lankan economy. Indian tourists express feelings for Sri Lanka with a very positive sentiment after coming here. But we can take many more steps to make it more permanent. Hence strengthening connectivity is a high priority for us.
