IMD red alert closes Mumbai schools and colleges on Thursday.

Due to the forecast of heavy precipitation, all schools and colleges in Mumbai will be suspended on Thursday. The BMC has upgraded the alert to’red’.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation announced Thursday that all Mumbai schools and colleges will be closed on Thursday due to the forecast of exceptionally heavy rainfall in the city. The India Meteorological Department upgraded the ‘orange’ alert to’red’ for Mumbai, forecasting exceedingly heavy rainfall in the city and suburbs from tonight at 8 p.m. until Thursday afternoon.

The BMC announced that, per the decision of municipal commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, all primary, secondary, and higher secondary institutions and colleges in the city and suburbs of Mumbai will be closed on July 27, 2023.

The BMC urged residents to remain vigilant and adhere to administration instructions.

In various sections of the city, heavy to extremely heavy precipitation has fallen since noon. In a 10-hour period ending at 6 p.m., the city received an average of 76.45 mm of precipitation. While the eastern suburbs of Mumbai received an average of 58.01mm of precipitation, the western suburbs received an average of 70.43mm.

In response to the’red alert’ issued by the weather department, the Raigad district authorities had already declared a holiday for all schools and colleges until Thursday. The district has thus far received 64% of the average rainfall for this monsoon season, according to officials quoted by PTI.

In the 24 hours ending at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, the district received an average of 104 millimetres of precipitation. The district collector’s office stated in a press release that Mahad taluka received the most precipitation during the period with 145 mm, while Alibaug taluka received the least with 45 mm.
