The First Leg Newcastle Semi Final
Joelinton’s goal gave Newcastle United a win at Southampton in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final. This gives them a small lead going into the second leg.
The Brazilian made up for missing an easy chance earlier when, with 17 minutes left, he scored the winning goal by getting on the end of a perfect low cross from substitute Alexander Isak.
Newcastle is now the favourite to reach its first major Wembley final since the FA Cup final in 1999. The team is trying to end a trophy drought that has lasted since it won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969.
And if Newcastle wins the match in the second leg on Tyneside, they will have Nick Pope to thank. While the score was still 0-0 in the second half, Pope made two important saves from Southampton’s substitute Che Adams, bringing his personal record to 10 straight clean sheets.
Adam Armstrong scored what Southampton thought was an equaliser, but VAR ruled it was a handball, and defender Duje Caleta-Car was sent off for a second yellow card in the last few minutes, making the night even worse.
Joelinton was a key player. His first-half goal was controversially ruled out for handball, and he missed a wide-open goal when it seemed easier to score. He then scored to make Eddie Howe’s team the clear favourite to reach Wembley.

On Tuesday, January 31, the two teams will play the second leg at St. James’ Park.
We asked if Nick Pope was the Premier League’s best goalie.
Not everyone agrees, but more people say that he is than say that he is not.
Nathan Jones, the manager of Southampton, told Sky Sports: “I’m really happy with how well things went. These are a great team with a lot of size and athleticism. They have had time to find players and have done so, making them a very tough team to play against.
“I thought we did a great job. They had a couple of good chances, and so did we. We’ve come a long way if we can compete and be as good as we were, and in the second half, we went after the game. We stepped it up a lot.
“We just didn’t have enough good wide players. Once we gain confidence and get one or two, we’ll be a different threat. I’m very happy for them.”

In the FA Cup, non-league Boreham Wood lost to Accrington Stanley tonight. Accrington will now host Leeds in round four.
The First Leg Newcastle Semi Final said on Sky Sports: “Both teams had their moments and chances to win, but we’re only at halftime and there’s still a long way to go.
“We had chances today, but we weren’t good at taking them until we scored.
“Even though today has been good, there is still a long way to go in the tie. I can’t find any fault with anything. We were good at defence, and Nick again made some big saves.
“His two saves were very important. Adams’ one-on-one came at a crucial point in the game, when they were getting better and the crowd was getting louder. However, Nick stepped up and made a play that kept us in the game.
“This year, he’s been great for us. Our defence has played well in front of him, but when we’ve needed him, he’s come through for us.
“We were happy to win because that was our goal, but we know that 1-0 is close and nothing is set in stone.

Today, there were 3,200 Newcastle fans at a game on a Tuesday at the other end of the country on a freezing cold January night.

“Great finish, great team goal,” they said about Joelinton’s goal. Coming into a two-leg semi-final is never easy, but you always want to get ahead and win the first leg.

Bruno Guimaraes of Newcastle tells Sky Sports: “We were in charge of the game, but we blew some big chances.
“It’s only the first game, so we need to start planning for the next one. Today, I’m proud of the team.
“We could have scored more goals, but the most important thing was to be one goal ahead of Southampton.
“Nick Pope, I want to thank you. I think he is the best goalkeeper in the world.
“Let’s keep it going.”
