History

Klu-kkhyil gompa is or was the initial name of Likir Monastery. Likir, which signifies “Naga encircled,” Nanda and Taksako, two serpents, are said to have protected the abbey. Likir Gompa, one of the oldest and busiest monasteries, has a wealth of genesis and history tales. Likir Gompa is under the protection of the Yellow Hat branch or Gelugpa branch of Buddhism, and it is said that Tsongkhapa founded this monastery in the fifteenth century.

Structure of the monastery

The wall paintings, stone artifacts, murals, and handicrafts that surround Likir monastery serve as an ideal example of Buddhist heritage, culture, and tenets. There is a school located inside the convent as well. It is run by the Central Institute of Buddhist Studies and has a public library where people can study about Buddhism and old manuscripts. Two assembly rooms, a central courtyard with six rows of seats for lamas, and a throne for the top Lama are all features of the gompa. The gods who protected the abbey are honored in a Gonkhang room.

Location: The monastery is located 6 km north of Leh-Srinagar highway before the village of Saspol. From Leh, the distance is 62 km to the west of the town.

Timings: It is open on all days from 09:00 am to 01:00 pm and from 02:00 pm to 06:00 pm

Entry fee: INR 5-10 per person

Highlights: The annual event Dosmochey is held in the monastery from the 27th to 29th day of 12th month of Tibetan Calendar.
