Lionel Messi, winner of seven Ballon d’Or awards, made his name in Spain with FC Barcelona, where he had played since he was a toddler. Messi became a free agent in 2021 due to financial difficulties and signed with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). Fans in Paris have been wondering if World Cup champion Lionel Messi will ever return to FC Barcelona, the team he deems “home,” since he moved there.
According to Diario Ole, the Argentine has stated his intention to return to Spain at completion of his professional playing career, specifically to settle in Barcelona.
In 2021, Lionel Messi walked out of Camp Nou. The standout player for Paris Saint-Germain is expected to extend his contract with the French powerhouse. Numerous sources have reported that at some point in his career, the 35-year-old will play in Major League Soccer (MLS).
In light of club president Joan Laporta’s comments that the former forward deserved a better farewell than he received in 2021, FC Barcelona have left the door open for Messi. It’s interesting to note that Messi’s former team captain, Xavi Hernandez, is currently serving as Barça’s head coach.
Messi: “When I retire, I plan to move back to Barcelona, the city that has been my home and the city that has given me so much.”
Barca vice president Eduard Romeu has also hinted that Messi can return to the Spanish giants by saying it would be viable ‘financially.’
On Wednesday, he told Catalunya Radio (via ESPN’s Sam Marsden and Moises Llorens) that bringing Messi back “would be viable financially” because he would be a free agent.

In August of 2021, Messi signed a two-year contract with PSG, and that deal has since been extended. I can’t help but wonder what drove Messi to leave. Barcelona owed more than €1.3 billion at the time, therefore the club could not afford to recruit a player with a deal that included a salary of more than €100 million per year. Messi broke down in tears during his farewell address at Camp Nou, and several of his teammates, including Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba, and many more, were also devastated.
