Yashasvi Jaiswal rewrote history by becoming the first Indian opener to achieve a century in his debut Test match away from home. The left-handed batsman, who was given the Test cap by captain Rohit Sharma on Wednesday, attained the milestone on the second day of the first Test against the West Indies at Dominica’s Windsor Park. Late on Thursday, Jaiswal completed his century with a single off fellow debutant Alick Athanaze during the 70th over of India’s innings. He got there with 215 throws.

Overall, Jaiswal became the seventeenth Indian to make a century in his first Test and the third designated opener to do so. Nevertheless, he is the first Indian opener to score a century in his first Test away from home. Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw scored their maiden Test centuries against Australia and West Indies in Mohali and Rajkot, respectively.

Jaiswal is only the fifth Indian to achieve a century in his Test debut abroad. Abbas Ali Baig was the first to do so against England in 1959. The others are Surinder Amarnath at Auckland in 1976, Pravin Amre at Durban against South Africa in 1992, Sourav Ganguly at Lord’s against England in 1996, and Virender Sehwag at Bloemfontein against South Africa in 2001.

Jaiswal also became the fourth youngest Indian to register a hundred in his first Test at the age of 21 years and 196 days, after Prithvi Shaw, Abbas Ali Baig, and Gundappa Viswanath.On his Test debut, he became the seventeenth Indian batsman to achieve a century. The 21-year-old opened the innings with captain Rohit Sharma and displayed his class against the Windies bowling attack, which posed no threat to him with the ball.

Jaiswal received his first India call-up after being rewarded for his outstanding performance in IPL 2023, where he scored 625 runs in 14 matches at an average of 48.08 and also scored a magnificent hundred. Before making his Test debut, he amassed 1845 runs in 15 first-class matches at an exceptional average of 80.21, including nine centuries.
