Top Punjab Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, who was sentenced to one year in prison by the Supreme Court for a road rage incident in which a man was murdered 34 years ago, will be released from Patiala Jail tomorrow, according to a tweet from his official account. His attorney, HPS Varma, also verified the news, PTI reported.
“Everyone is hereby notified that Sardar Navjot Singh Sidhu will be released from Patiala Jail tomorrow.”(As reported by the relevant authorities),” read the text.
Mr. Varma stated that according to the Punjab Prison rules, a prisoner with excellent behavior is eligible for a general pardon.”He is likely to be released from Patiala jail on Saturday,” he was quoted as saying by PTI.
The 59-year-old cricketer-turned-politician was sentenced to one year of “rigorous imprisonment” by the Supreme Court in May of last year. He had resigned as Punjab Congress chief after his party lost the state election.

The court’s decision was based on a petition filed by the family of a man who died in 1988 following a fight with Mr. Sidhu and his companion. The family had requested a harsher sentence and a review of the 2018 Supreme Court ruling that exonerated him of homicide.
On December 27, 1988, Mr. Sidhu argued with Patiala resident Gurnam Singh, 65 years old, over a parking space. Mr. Sidhu and his companion, Rupinder Singh Sandhu, are alleged to have dragged Gurnam Singh from his vehicle and assaulted him. Eventually, he perished in a hospital.

A witness accused Mr. Sidhu of murdering Gurnam Singh with a blow to the skull.In 2018, the Supreme Court ordered Mr. Sidhu to pay a fine of 1,000 for intentionally harming a person.In reviewing its own order, the court determined that it was “appropriate” to jail Mr. Sidhu, stating that “some aggravated culpability” must be affixed when a person dies.
