Niclas Fuellkrug’s two goals in Germany’s 2-0 victory over Peru in a friendly on Saturday helped the team shake off its World Cup melancholy. Fuellkrug scored twice in the first half to give Hansi Flick’s team a much-needed victory in their first match since their disastrous World Cup campaign in Qatar last year, which resulted in a group-stage exit. Today was all about getting off to a solid start in the new year, according to Fuellkrug.
“After what happened at the World Cup, it was crucial that we got off to a good start in 2023, and I’m glad we were able to do that,” said Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who started in place of Manuel Neuer.
Flick had expressed a desire to experiment with younger players in exhibitions against Peru and Belgium, as his nation had automatically qualified for Euro 2024 as hosts.
The Germany head coach selected a squad that included five uncapped players and omitted notable players like Thomas Mueller, Leroy Sane, and Ilkay Gundogan.
But it was Fuellkrug, a 30-year-old Bundesliga journeyman, who made the difference as Germany defeated Peru with relative ease.
Germany merited to take the lead after 12 minutes of play because they dominated the first half.
Kai Havertz’s clearance of Nico Schlotterbeck’s long pass in the area allowed unguarded Fuellkrug to score the game’s first goal from close range.
Just after the half-hour mark, debutant Marius Wolf sent a low cross into the box to set up Fuellkrug for a close-range finish to double the lead.
In his 75th international match, Joshua Kimmich, the team’s captain, said, “We could have scored more goals in the first half.”
Fuellkrug has scored five goals in as many international matches and is well on his path to becoming a fixture for Germany.
“I’m getting my opportunities, and I’m thrilled that I’m connecting so well with the other players, so let’s hope it continues,” he told ZDF.
Meanwhile, Flick lavished praise on his in-form forward.
“Niclas is an exceptional performer. “He is confident and the type of player who can bring other players along with him and bring positive energy to the group,” the Germany coach said.
Germany could have scored an additional goal. Following a foul on Schlotterbeck in the penalty area, Havertz blasted a penalty against the post before unlawfully converting the rebound.

Referee Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi of Italy disallowed the goal, citing Havertz’s rebound as a second contact by the penalty taker.
Fuellkrug, who has become a fan favorite since scoring two goals in Qatar, was substituted off in the 75th minute alongside Havertz to thunderous acclaim.
In their stead, Flick gave international debuts to Kevin Schade of Brentford and Mergim Berisha of Augsburg.
