World Red Cross Day, also known as Red Crescent Day, is observed annually on May 8 to commemorate Henry Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross and the first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. His birthday is May 8, 1828. This day recognizes the contributions of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement to the provision of humanitarian services to all people, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or political affiliation.
On World Red Cross Day, a variety of events, fundraisers, and awareness campaigns are held in honor of the humanitarian work of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is a time to recognize those who make a difference in their communities and commemorate the spirit of humanitarianism.
WORLD RED CROSS DAY HISTORY:
On May 8, 1948, the first Red Cross Day was commemorated. 1946 was the year that the Tokyo proposal went into effect during World War II. The Board of Governors of the League of Red Cross Societies (LORCS), which subsequently evolved into the General Assembly of the International Federation of Red Cross Societies, suggested the prospect of annual celebrations. On the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross, the proposition to celebrate World Red Cross Day annually was adopted on May 8, 1948, two years later. The event is officially known as “World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day” since 1984.
