Sitharaman presents ‘first budget of Amrit Kaal’: What is Amrit Kaal and what does it signify?

Finance Minister of the Union Nirmala Sitharaman began her budget speech by referring to it as “the first budget of Amrit Kaal.” Throughout her speech, she repeatedly used the term “Amrit Kaal.”

During the 75th Independence Day celebrations in 2021, it was Prime Minister Narendra Modi who first used the term “Amrit Kaal.” It derives from Vedic astrology and signifies a golden age. In the run-up to the general elections of 2024, the BJP-led government has emphasised ‘Amrit Kaal’, claiming that the upcoming period in India will be its most prosperous, characterised by economic growth and social justice. “Amrit Kaal” also refers to the hope for a better future in which India is self-sufficient and fulfils all of its humanitarian obligations.
