In the first match of the 2023 men’s ODI World Cup, New Zealand’s Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra smashed the first and second hundreds of the tournament, respectively, in a match against England in Ahmedabad. Conway achieved his century in only 83 deliveries, giving New Zealand complete control of the 283-run chase. The left-hander hit his sixth century in the format, and Ravindra hit triple digits for the third time in the 32nd over. Conway and Ravindra joined an exclusive group of batters as they each reached triple figures in their first World Cup games.
They created history by being only the 15th and 16th hitters to score a century in their first World Cup at bat. Conway, who bats from the left side, reached the century mark with a spectacular display of brilliance, hitting 13 fours and two sixes in his innings.
The first player to score a century in his first World Cup at bat was the Englishman Dennis Amiss. Amiss reached this landmark during the first-ever World Cup match, played against India in 1975. Not only did Andy Flower of Zimbabwe get a century in his first One-Day International, but he also did so in his first World Cup appearance, both in 1992.

The Kiwis made an electrifying start with the bat against hot-favourites England, who have been widely promoted to defend the title. A rather one-sided match in Ahmedabad was a stark contrast to the two teams’ last meeting in the 2019 World Cup final, when the match and Super Over ended in a draw and England ultimately won the trophy on the basis of a superior boundary count.
