Russia calls ICC arrest order against Putin “meaningless”

A ministry of foreign affairs spokeswoman told media that Russia’s 2016 withdrawal from the ICC treaty made the International Criminal Court’s arrest order against President Vladimir Putin meaningless.

A ministry of foreign affairs spokeman told media that Russia’s withdrawal from the ICC treaty in 2016 rendered the International Criminal Court’s arrest order against President Vladimir Putin meaningless.

“Russia is not an ICC member and bears no obligations,” said foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova. Russia does not work with this body, so any International Court of Justice arrest would be null and void.

Dmitry Medvedev, a former Russian president and vice chair of Russia’s Security Council, said that the ICC’s arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin was like toilet paper.

“A order to arrest Vladimir Putin has been issued by the International Criminal Court. With the toilet paper emoji, he wrote, “No need to explain WHERE this paper should be used.”

Putin could be arrested for war crimes in Ukraine.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an order for the arrest of Russian President Vladimir Putin for war crimes, such as taking children from Ukraine. It says that Putin is to blame for the “illegal deportation” and “illegal transfer” of children from parts of Ukraine that are controlled to Russia.

A warrant was also issued for a Russian officer in charge of children’s rights named Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova. She was wanted on the same charges. But the orders can only be carried out with help from other countries, since the ICC does not have its own police force.

A trial at the ICC is unlikely because Russia does not recognise the court’s authority and does not send its own people to stand trial there. Even though Ukraine is not a member of the ICC, it has given the court authority over its land. Since starting an investigation a year ago, the ICC prosecutor has been to Ukraine four times.
