The White House has stated that it has new evidence that shows Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un have exchanged letters. This comes at a time when Russia is attempting to purchase additional arms from North Korea in the midst of the conflict in Ukraine. A recent visit by the Russian military minister Sergei Shoigu to Pyongyang resulted in the North Korean government being asked by Shoigu to raise the amount of weapons that are exported to Russia, according to John Kirby, a spokesperson for the National Security Council. Kirby stated that the NSC had made this discovery. He stated that in order to strengthen Russia’s defense industrial base, Russia is searching for extra artillery rounds as well as other fundamental materials.
Earlier, the administration of Joe Biden stated that the Kremlin has become dependent not just on Iran but also on North Korea for the supply of armaments. Because of the nuclear programs they maintain and their track records regarding human rights, North Korea and Iran are virtually isolated on the international scene.
In March of this year, the White House reported that it had gathered intelligence indicating that Russia was attempting to broker a food-for-arms agreement with North Korea in which Moscow would provide North Korea with food and other commodities in exchange for weaponry. The White House reported last year that it had determined that the Wagner Group had accepted an arms cargo from North Korea. Russia and North Korea have previously denied the allegations.
North Korea, however, has taken Russia’s side in the Ukraine conflict, claiming that the West’s “hegemonic policy” compelled Moscow to take military action.
In a retaliatory strike, drone attacks targeted numerous regions of Russia, while authorities in Kyiv fought the city’s heaviest air assault since the spring. At least two persons were killed and three were injured in the capital region of Ukraine, according to local authorities. Overnight in Kiev, air defense forces reportedly fired down 28 Russian cruise missiles and 15 drones.
