Russia withdraws nuclear treaty:Today, Russian President Vladimir Putin made the announcement that Russia would be withdrawing from the New START deal with the United States. This treaty places restrictions on the strategic nuclear arsenals of both countries.
Putin told lawmakers near the end of a major speech he delivered to parliament nearly one year into the conflict in Ukraine that Russia is suspending its participation in the strategic offensive arms treaty because “in this regard, I am forced to announce today that Russia is suspending its participation in the treaty.”
The New START deal was initially signed in Prague in 2010, put into effect the following year, and then extended for an additional five years in 2021, just after Joe Biden was sworn in as President of the United States.
It sets a limit on the number of strategic nuclear warheads that can be deployed by both the United States and Russia, as well as the number of land-, submarine-, and air-based missiles and bombers that can deliver those warheads.
