Listen to the article:
A massive rocket attack on two buildings in eastern Ukraine that were serving as temporary housing for Ukrainian forces resulted in the deaths of more than 600 Ukrainian servicemen, according to a statement released by Russia’s Ministry of Defense on Sunday.
The assertion made by the defence ministry could not be immediately verified by Reuters. There was no immediate comment on the Russian claim from Ukraine; however, the mayor of Kramatorsk, the eastern Ukrainian town that Russia said it had targeted, stated earlier on Sunday on Facebook that nobody had been killed in an attack on various buildings in the city. Kramatorsk is the town that Russia said it had targeted.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the attack on the buildings in Kramatorsk was carried out as retaliation for an earlier attack carried out by the Ukrainian military on a Russian barracks in Makiivka, which is located in an area of the Donetsk region that is under the control of Moscow’s forces and in which at least 89 Russian servicemen were killed.

In a statement, the ministry claimed that it had targeted the Ukrainian troops with the assistance of “reliable intelligence.” According to what was read, over 700 Ukrainian soldiers had been housed in one hostel, and over 600 had been housed in another.
According to the statement released by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, “more than 600 Ukrainian servicemen were destroyed as a result of a massive missile strike on these temporary deployment points of Ukrainian army units.”
However, reporters from Reuters travelled to the two college dormitories that Russia’s defence ministry claimed at the time of the overnight strike had been temporarily housing Ukrainian servicemen close to the front line of the conflict. It did not appear that either structure was directly struck by missiles or suffered significant damage. There were no obvious signs that soldiers had been living there, and there were no signs of bodies or traces of blood that could be found.
