According to persons familiar with the situation, the president of the YSR Telangana Party (YSRTP), Y. S. Sharmila, met with top leaders of the Congress party, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, on Thursday. This marks a step further in the direction of her party’s merger with the Congress party.
During the course of around one and a half hours, Sharmila and the Gandhis engaged in conversation at their home while eating breakfast. Sharmila was accompanied by her evangelist husband, Anil Kumar.
Later, when speaking to reporters, Sharmila revealed that she and Sonia and Rahul Gandhi had productive conversations about the issue. The leader of the YSRTP stated that because she is the daughter of the late Y S Rajasekhar Reddy, who served as chief minister of the unified Andhra Pradesh state government, she will continue to strive toward the welfare of the people of Telangana. She remarked, “I want to tell you one thing, the countdown for Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s rule has begun,” but she did not elaborate further on her intentions for the future.
According to a leader of the YSRTP who has knowledge of the situation, Sharmila has reportedly discussed the technicalities of the merger between her party and the Congress. She informed Sonia that her father’s wish was for Rahul Gandhi to become Prime Minister, and she gave Sonia her word that she would work toward achieving her father’s goal. On August 11, she already met with the general secretary of the AICC, K. C. Venugopal. The party leader stated that the meeting with Sonia and Rahul that took place today was nothing more than a formality, and he went on to say that it was highly likely that Sharmila would announce the merger of her party with the Congress once she returned to Hyderabad in a day or two.

It would appear that the high command of the Congress party has requested that Sharmila play a more significant role in the party in both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh and has guaranteed her that they will look out for her political interests. “It is not immediately known what specific assurances the high command has provided to her, but there is a possibility that they could be…” However, during the next elections in Telangana, she will engage in a significant amount of campaigning on behalf of the party, as stated by the leader cited above.
