Former Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi is in intensive care with leukemia and a lung infection

“Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is currently hospitalized in intensive care for treatment of a lung infection,”

” Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi is currently hospitalized in intensive care for treatment of a lung infection,” the hospital said in a statement, adding that leukemia had also been diagnosed.

Former Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday with respiratory difficulties and a diagnosis of leukemia. In a statement, the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan confirmed the diagnosis and added that the 86-year-old politician’s cancer is not life-threatening and that he has had it “for some time.”

Due to a conviction for tax fraud, the media mogul was banned from politics for six years following three mandates as Italy’s prime minister. Berlusconi returned to politics in 2022, when he successfully ran for a seat in the Italian Senate, where he represents the northern municipality of Monza.

Before entering politics in 1994, Berlusconi established Italy’s largest commercial television network and garnered international renown as the owner of European soccer powerhouse AC Milan. The preceding political establishment in Italy was implicated in a corruption scandal, resulting in a period of political unrest.

“We all wish to be optimistic, and we anticipate that the lion will soon return to lead the celebration. He is our political leadership, and he never gives up,” Antonio Tajani, Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, told RAI state television.
