23 Dead As Tornado Tears Through US Town

4 people were missing as search and rescue teams combed through the destruction looking for survivors after the storm struck Silver City, a town of 200 people in Western Mississippi.

At least 23 people were killed and dozens were injured when a tornado and severe thunderstorms rushed across Mississippi on Friday evening, according to the state’s emergency management agency. The tornado left a path of destruction spanning more than 100 miles. (160 km).
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency stated in a series of tweets that four people were missing as search and rescue teams combed through the devastation looking for survivors after the storm struck Silver City, a town of 200 people in Western Mississippi.

“Unfortunately, it is anticipated that these numbers will change,” it stated, referring to the death toll.CNN reported that search and rescue teams were also active in Rolling Fork, a community of 1,700 people that was devastated by the tornado.

Brandy Showah told CNN, “I’ve never seen anything like it.” This once magnificent small municipality no longer exists.Showah disclosed to the network that her grandmother’s residence had sustained damage.

“My friend was trapped in her home a few houses down, but we were able to rescue her,” Showah said, adding that there were still people trapped in their homes next to her grandmother.United Cajun Navy President Todd Terrell told ABC News that Rolling Fork was “pretty much devastated” and that many people remained stranded in their homes. His organization is a group of volunteer rescuers.

Terrell compared the devastation to a 2011 tornado that killed 162 people in Joplin, Missouri.Storm chasers and observers reported at least 24 tornadoes to the National Weather Service between Friday night and Saturday morning. The allegations extended from the western border of Mississippi to the state’s center and into Alabama.

Photographs of the devastation published by news networks depicted entire buildings reduced to rubble, cars on their sides, and people climbing through the debris in the dark.”Many in the Mississippi Delta need your prayers and God’s protection tonight,” tweeted Governor Tate Reeve.
