Railway will start soon OTP Based Digital Lock to Protect Goods and Parcel Trains Against Theft
On Tuesday, a senior Railways official announced plans to use a digital lock system that uses one-time passwords (OTPs) to prevent theft on board freight and package trains.
Frequently employed by trucking companies to prevent theft, this technology equips each truck with a GPS-enabled smart lock that permits real-time tracking of the vehicle.
Authorities have stated that the whole system, including the ability to open and lock carriages, would be based on secure OTP.
“When the shipment is in transit, you will not have access to the products. Without any third-party intervention, it will be opened with an OTP and closed with another. All that remains is to seal the trains and check that the seal is still intact at each stop. Far less trouble will arise when the train is in motion if this is done “said a government representative.
When asked who would receive the OTP at each station where loading or unloading would take place, he indicated it would be a member of the railway staff who would be responsible for maintaining the system’s efficiency.
The official explained the procedure by saying that after the lock is closed, a one-time password (OTP) is issued to the mobile device of the appropriate employees. When arriving at their destination, drivers must verify their position by pushing a button on the lock.
After verifying the staff member’s OTP, a second OTP is issued to the driver’s phone.
Also, the train’s location and movement will be recorded as they are monitored. The official’s mobile phone will receive an alert if there is an attempted door tampering or collision.

While the official was unable to offer information on the total value of commodities taken from trains during services, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) recovered stolen railway property worth 7.37 crore in 2022 and arrested 11,268 criminals as part of Operation Rail Suraksha.
At least three railway zones, according to the officials, are now seeking to find firms that might supply this service to the Railways at a reasonable price.
