In the midst of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday and expressed condolences over the loss of civilian life at the al-Ahli hospital in Gaza. In reiterating India’s steadfast adherence to the principles governing the Israel-Palestine conflict, Prime Minister Modi assured the Palestinian people of humanitarian aid shipments. “Spoke to the President of the Palestinian Authority H.E. Mahmoud Abbas. Conveyed my condolences at the loss of civilian lives at the Al Ahli Hospital in Gaza. We will continue to send humanitarian assistance for the Palestinian people. Shared our deep concern at the terrorism, violence and deteriorating security situation in the region. Reiterated India’s long-standing principled position on the Israel-Palestine issue,” PM Modi tweeted.

Prime Minister Modi addressed the Palestine authorities for the first time since the Israel-Hamas conflict erupted on October 7, following Hamas’ unexpected offensive into Israel.

Prime Minister Modi earlier conveyed his solidarity with Israel and engaged in a conversation with Prime Minister Netanyahu of Israel. Prime Minister Modi expressed shock and concern on Wednesday regarding the civilian casualties of the ongoing conflict, following reports that thousands of people were slain in an assault on a hospital in Gaza. Although the Israeli Defense Forces cited an analysis report to prove that the attack was caused by a misfired rocket from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, a terrorist organization labeled by both Israel and the United States, no one accepted culpability for the incident.

What is India’s long-standing position in Israel-Palestine?

Following Prime Minister Modi’s statement endorsing Israel’s position, a discourse ensued regarding the official stance of India regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict. Israel and India maintain strategic diplomatic relations. India’s inaugural prime minister to visit Israel and Palestine is Narendra Modi. India opposed the 2017 United States and Israeli resolution designating all of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The ministry of external affairs earlier said India believes in long-standing support for the establishment of a sovereign, independent and viable state of Palestine. “India always advocated the resumption of direct negotiations towards establishing a sovereign, independent, and viable state of Palestine, living within secure and recognised borders, side by side at peace with Israel. I think that position remains the same,” MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said.

In contrast, India vehemently denounces terrorism and the attack carried out by Hamas against Israel.

The statement said, “While in New Delhi, the President will also praise Prime Minister Modi’s leadership of the G20 and reaffirm the US’s commitment to the G20 as the premier forum for economic cooperation, including by hosting it in 2026.”

During his trip to India, Biden will attend the G20 Summit. There, he and other G20 leaders will talk about how they can work together to solve global problems, such as the transition to clean energy and fighting climate change, reducing the economic and social effects of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and making multilateral development banks stronger.

“On Saturday and Sunday, the President will take part in the G20 summit. At the summit, the President and G20 partners will talk about ways to work together on a variety of global issues, such as the clean energy transition and fighting climate change, reducing the economic and social effects of Putin’s war in Ukraine, and improving the ability of multilateral development banks, such as the World Bank, to fight poverty, including by tackling global challenges.”

On August 29, White House press secretary Karine Jean Pierre said that US President Joe Biden will “reaffirm US commitment to the G20” as the world’s top forum for economic cooperation. Biden will also talk about a variety of issues, including the social effects of Russia’s war in Ukraine, the White House said on Tuesday. Karine Jean Pierre said these things during a meeting with reporters.

Pierre told reporters about the US President’s plan that Biden “will go to Hanoi, Vietnam, on September 10 after attending the G20 Summit in New Delhi.”

In response to a question about what President Biden wants to accomplish at G20, the White House press secretary said, “President Biden will reaffirm the US commitment to the G20 as the world’s top forum for economic cooperation.”

She also said that Biden will “discuss a range of joint efforts to deal with global issues, such as the clean energy transition and fighting climate change, reducing the economic and social effects of Russia’s war in Ukraine, and improving the ability of multilateral development banks to fight poverty and deal with the major transnational challenges that countries all over the world are facing.”

India took the G20 Presidency on December 1 last year. The 18th G20 Summit, which will take place in New Delhi on September 9 and 10, will be the culmination of all the G20 talks and processes that have taken place this year.

A G20 Leaders’ Declaration will be approved at the end of the G20 Summit, stating Leaders’ commitment towards the priorities discussed and agreed upon during the various ministerial and working group meetings.

US Vice President Joe Biden will travel to India from September 7-10 to attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit, confirming an earlier Hindustan Times report.

The White House announced on Tuesday that he and other G20 partners will discuss joint efforts to address global issues such as clean energy transition and combating climate change, mitigating economic and social impacts of the Ukraine war, and enhancing the capacity of multilateral development banks such as the World Bank to better combat poverty.

During his visit to New Delhi, the US President will laud Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s G20 leadership and “reaffirm the US commitment to the G20 as the premier forum for economic cooperation, which includes hosting it in 2026.”

India assumed the G20 presidency from 1 December 2022 to 30 November 2023 and has hosted numerous meetings across the country.

During Modi’s State visit to the United States in June of this year, Biden expressed his excitement for the G20 summit in New Delhi in September.

Biden applauded New Delhi’s leadership in its current G20 presidency, which brought a renewed focus on strengthening multilateral institutions and international cooperation to address “global challenges such as climate change, pandemics, fragility and conflict, along with work to accelerate achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and lay the foundation for strong, sustainable, balanced, and inclusive growth,” according to a joint statement from India and the United States.

Biden’s trip to India for the G20 Summit was also mentioned by Donald Lu, assistant secretary of state for South and Central Asia.

“This will be a pivotal year for the India-United States relationship. India hosts the G20, while the United States hosts APEC and Japan hosts the G7. We have many QUAD members who are assuming leadership positions, and this provides us with opportunities to bring our nations closer together, as Lu had previously stated.

As PM Modi addressed Manipur on Thursday in response to the INDIA alliance’s no-confidence motion, he stated that he would discuss two past incidents, both of which were caused by the Congress. “The initial incident occurred on March 5, 1966. The Air Force of the Congress attacked the people of Mizoram. The Congress should clarify whether or not it was foreign air. Were the people of Mizoram not my country’s citizens? Wasn’t the nation responsible for their security?” PM Modi declared.

“To this day, Mizoram has not forgotten that day because no endeavour has been made to heal that wound. Who was in charge then? Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The Congress covered this up,” Prime Minister Modi said, adding that the Congress had destroyed the trust of the northeast. The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, stated, “This wound always resurfaces in one form or another.”

“In 1962, when China attacked India, when people of the country were expecting the government to save them, Nehru said in his radio speech ‘my heart goes out to the people of Assam’. This was the circumstance. This radio broadcast reminds people of how Nehru ji abandoned them to their fate, Prime Minister Modi said.

Northeast jigad ka tukda: PM Modi on Manipur

“The situation in Manipur is presented as if the difficulties just arose recently. Congress bears responsibility for this situation. “The people of the northeast are not to blame,” said Prime Minister Modi.

Once upon a time in Manipur, photographs of Mahatma Gandhi were prohibited in government offices. Who held authority then? PM Modi said as NDA lawmakers chanted “Congress.” “Their suffering and compassion are selective. They cannot consider the nation or humanity. Their sympathy begins and ends with politics, Prime Minister Modi said, adding that bandhs and blockades in Manipur are a thing of the past.

The primary suspect who stripped Kuki women and paraded them nude has been arrested after a video of the two-month-old incident went viral and sparked outrage across the nation. N Biren Singh, chief minister of Manipur, stated that a comprehensive investigation is underway and that all perpetrators will face severe punishment, including the possibility of capital punishment. In the face of national outrage and mounting pressure from the opposition for Prime Minister Modi to speak out, Modi vowed action and expressed that his heart was filled with anger and pain.

Manipur women paraded naked: ‘Capital punishment will be considered’

After the initial arrest, which was made only after the footage of the incident went viral, N Biren Singh stated that the death penalty would be considered for the perpetrators. As calls for his resignation grew louder, the prime minister tweeted, “Let it be known that there is absolutely no place in our society for such heinous acts.”

“My heart goes out to the two women who were subjected to a profoundly disgraceful and inhumane act, as depicted in the upsetting video that surfaced yesterday. As soon as the video surfaced, the Manipur Police took Suo-moto notice of the incident and moved swiftly to make the first arrest this morning. A thorough investigation is currently ongoing, and we will ensure that all of the perpetrators are punished severely, including considering the possibility of the death penalty. “Let it be known that such heinous acts have no place in our society,” the chief minister tweeted.

‘Using women as an instrument…simply unacceptable’: CJI

Taking suo moto notice of the viral video, the Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, stated that the incident is inexcusable. “Using women as a tool in a region of communal conflict. The worst constitutional violations. We are profoundly troubled by the videos that have emerged. We will act if the government does not,” the CJI stated.
