China vows ‘resolute, effective’ response to high-level US meeting with Taiwan

Wednesday, the Chinese foreign ministry condemned the high-level US meeting between Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen and US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in California and vowed to take resolute and effective measures to protect national sovereignty.

According to media reports, in an official statement, the Chinese foreign ministry referred to Tsai’s visit to the United States as a “transit” and stated that it profoundly violated the one-China principle.

The ministry stated that Tsai and McCarthy continue to conduct the meeting despite China’s grave protests and repeated warnings. The statement read, “US officials are giving Tsai a platform to make separatist remarks seeking Taiwan independence.”

“This is essentially the United States cooperating with Taiwan to support the political activities of “Taiwan independence” separatists in the United States, to conduct official contact with Taiwan and to improve substantive relations with Taiwan, and to frame it as a transit,” the report continued.

China added that this voyage violates the terms of the three joint communiques between China and the United States, in which the United States made a clear commitment to maintain only unofficial relations with Taiwan.

According to media, the United States has persistently attempted to contain China over the years by exploiting the Taiwan issue and undermining its commitments.

The United States has crossed the line and acted provocatively on issues such as US-Taiwan official exchanges, arms sales to and military dealings with Taiwan, and creating opportunities for Taiwan to expand its so-called ‘international space,’ according to the Chinese foreign ministry. The United States has also evaded and undermined the one-China principle.
