In Yakutsk, the coldest city on earth, temperatures have dropped to minus 50 degrees Celsius this week as a result of an unusually prolonged cold wave.
Residents of the mining settlement frequently witness the temperature consistently fall well below minus 40. The city is situated on the permafrost in the Russian Far East, 5,000 kilometres east of Moscow.
