Mohammad Akif Mahajar, spokesman for the Taliban Ministry of Vice and Virtue, was quoted by local news as saying that the Taliban have issued a new verbal decree bans women’s beauty salons in Kabul and other provinces.
In addition, the ministry has ordered the Kabul municipality to implement the Taliban leader’s new decree and revoke the licenses of women’s beauty salons.
Raihan Mubariz, a makeup artist, shared their plight with local News channel: “The males are unemployed. When men are unable to provide for their families, the women are compelled to labor in a beauty salon for bread. What can we do if they are prohibited there?
Another makeup artist stated, “We will not leave the house if the men have jobs.” What should we do? What should we do if we perish of starvation? You want us to perish.”
Since the Taliban came to power, girls and women have been prohibited from attending schools, universities, and working for non-governmental organizations (NGOs), as well as from visiting parks, cinemas, and other public areas. In Herat province, the Taliban prohibited families and women from entering establishments with gardens or green spaces earlier in April. According to Afghan government officials, the decision was made due to gender mingling or because women allegedly do not wear the hijab.
Other restrictions that the Taliban imposed on women include preventing females from attending classes beyond the sixth grade, prohibiting women from attending universities, restricting most employment opportunities, such as jobs at the United Nations, and prohibiting women from going to the gym. Women in the country are also prohibited from holding leadership positions, working, and traveling without a male companion.
Abdul Khabir, a resident of Kabul, stated, “The government should create a framework for it.” The framework should ensure that neither Islam nor the country is harmed.”
