The trial is not criminal in nature, but it comes at a time when Donald Trump confronts an onslaught of legal challenges that could jeopardize his bid for reelection in 2024. Donald Trump is also under investigation for his efforts to reverse his 2020 election loss in Georgia, his alleged mismanagement of classified documents, and his alleged involvement in the attack on the US Capitol.

E. Jean Carroll made the allegation for the first time in 2019 and sued Donald Trump for defamation, but she was unable to include the rape allegation. She filed a new complaint accusing Donald Trump of “forcibly raping and groping” her after a new law went into effect in New York in November 2022 allowing alleged sexual assault victims a one-year window to sue their alleged abusers decades after the attacks.

“He went on the offensive. He made fun of her. Her attorney sought unspecified damages for “significant pain and suffering, lasting psychological and monetary harms, loss of dignity and self-respect, and invasion of her privacy.”
