Isro joins hands with Indian Navy to conduct recovery trials for Gaganyaan Mission

As India gets ready to launch astronauts into space, the Indian Space Research Organization and the Indian Navy have teamed up to further the Gaganyaan Mission.

The crew module’s initial recovery tests were completed by Isro and the Indian Navy. The module will splash down in the ocean after returning to Earth’s atmosphere from orbit.

In order to get ready for crew module recovery operations for the Gaganyaan mission, the Indian Navy’s Water Survival Test Facility (WSTF) at Kochi hosted the initial recovery experiments. The Navy will be in charge of the recovery mission, which will take place in Indian waters.

The Indian Navy’s cutting-edge Water Survival Test Facility offers aircrews realistic training for escape from a lost aircraft under various simulated situations and accident scenarios. It is ideal for crew recovery trials since it simulates various sea state conditions, environmental variables, and day/night situations.

A Crew Module Recovery Model (CMRM) was employed for the testing that had a similar mass, centre of gravity, outside dimensions, and externals to the real crew module. During the tests, the series of procedures needed to recover the crew module were performed.

“The safe rescue of the crew must be completed as quickly as possible because it is the last task that must be completed for any successful human mission. As a result, numerous trials must be conducted to thoroughly train the recovery procedures for various scenarios “In a statement, Isro added.

The Standard Operating Procedures (SoP) for the recovery of the crew and crew module during the mission would hopefully be finalised as a result of the trials, according to the Indian Space Research Organization. The recovery trials will first be conducted in a confined pool, then in a harbour, and finally in the open ocean.

While the initial trial has been conducted in a closed pool, different phases of recovery trials starting with the recovery of the Crew module to the flight crew training are planned at the Navy’s facility.

“These trials assist in validating the SoP, and training recovery teams as well as the flight crew. They provide valuable inputs for the utilization of recovery accessories. The feedback from the recovery team/trainers helps improve the recovery operations SoP, design various recovery accessories, and finalize the training plan,” Isro added.
