Sunday, North Korea tested two strategic cruise missiles launched from a submarine. The missile launch occurs just before US-South Korea military exercises are scheduled to commence. The term “strategic” is typically applied to nuclear-capable weapons, which raises fresh concerns.
The submarine’s missile test confirmed the system’s dependability and evaluated the offensive capabilities of submerged units.
The purpose of the Two strategic cruise missiles launched from submarine was to demonstrate North Korea’s resolve to control a situation in which “US imperialists and south Korean puppet forces are becoming increasingly blatant in their anti-DPRK military manoeuvres.”
In the early morning hours of Sunday, the submarine “8.24 Yongung” off the east coast of Korea fired strategic cruise missiles. The missiles travelled approximately 1,500 kilometres before striking an underwater target.
In response to the most recent test, the Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea have placed the military on high alert. With the assistance of the United States, the country’s intelligence agency is attempting to determine the specifics of the launch.
Notably, South Korean and American troops will commence 11 days of joint exercises on Monday. The drills, titled “Freedom Shield 23,” will be conducted on a scale not seen since 2017. According to the two militaries, the exercises aim to strengthen the combined defensive posture of the allies.
North Korea asserts that the exercises are a dress rehearsal for an invasion and has conducted multiple missile tests in protest. The Us-Korea exercises will include amphibious landings and field exercises.
The North claims that the tests and drills it has conducted over the past year are an effort to bolster its nuclear deterrent and make more of its nuclear weapons fully operational.
The 8.24 Yongung (August 24th Hero) is North Korea’s only known experimental ballistic missile submarine. The country has stated that it is constructing a ballistic missile submarine.
