Uttarakhand: 44 prisoners found HIV positive in Haldwani jail

According to Dr. Singh, the number of HIV positive prisoners in detention is steadily increasing, causing concern among the jail administration.

In the Haldwani jail, 44 prisoners found HIV positive, and one female inmate has also tested positive, according to Dr. Paramjit Singh, ART Center Incharge at Sushila Tiwari Hospital.

According to Dr. Singh, the number of HIV positive prisoners in detention is steadily increasing, causing concern among the haldwani jail administration.

Regarding the treatment of the detainees, Dr. Singh stated, “An ART (Antiretroviral Therapy) center for HIV patients has been established, where infected patients are treated, and my team examines the prisoners in the jail on a regular basis.”

According to the guidelines of the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), any HIV-positive prisoner receives complimentary treatment and medication, Dr. Singh explained.

Dr. Singh added that there are currently 1629 male prisoners and 70 female detainees. After such a large number of inmates were discovered to be HIV-positive, the jail administration is also conducting routine checks on the inmates to ensure that HIV-infected prisoners are promptly treated.
