Tuesday, Union minister Smriti Irani asked Babita Phogat why she was not supporting her family members, the protesting wrestlers, as the month-long protest escalated with the demonstrators’ plan to immerse their medals in Haridwar’s Ganga, which was thwarted by farmer leader Naresh Tikait. Smriti Irani stated in an exclusive interview with Times Now, “I spoke with Babita Phogat ji. Do you believe that a world-renowned wrestler such as Babita Phogat will remain with those who exploited others, including her family members? The problem is not that the wrestlers said they would submerge their medals at 6 p.m. but didn’t do so until 8 p.m. Those with legal knowledge are aware that a legal proceeding is currently underway. If there is an intervention now, it will be detrimental to these women.”

“I want to know why opposition leaders wish to deny these wrestlers an impartial investigation. Do you believe Babita Phogat will stand up to her relatives in such a manner?” Smriti Irani said.

Smriti Irani stated in a second interview with News18 that the wrestlers’ protest is a purely political issue. “As a member of parliament and a woman, I wish to state that the Congress was unaware that Sudha Singh of Amethi received the Padma Shri in 2021. It would be preferable if the Congress family refrained from politicizing this issue. However, this is their custom, and they will continue to do so. Smriti Irani stated, “As a woman, I reiterate that the Supreme Court has already commented on this issue, so I will make no further remarks.”

Supriya Shrinate, leader of the Congress, criticized Smriti Irani’s response and questioned whether the Union minister’s remark supported the police action against the women wrestlers. “Before responding, please keep in mind that you are also the mother of a daughter. Could you make eye contact with your daughter after providing such ludicrous responses? tweeted a congressman.

Babita Phogat, a member of the BJP and a former wrestler, was observed distancing herself from the second phase of the wrestlers’ protest, which began at Jantar Mantar, whereas in the first phase, which began earlier this year, she acted as a mediator between the government and the protestors.
Babita objected to Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s presence at the protest site and pointed out that Priyanka Gandhi’s personal secretary Sandeep Singh had been accused of demeaning a Dalit woman.
