On January 10, the Beverly Hilton hosted the 80th Golden Globe 2023 Awards in Beverly Hills, California. This represented the Awards’ return to television screens.
For those unaware, the 79th Golden Globes in 2022 were not broadcast due to a boycott over the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s (HFPA) lack of diversity and other unethical practices. The Awards ceremony did not feature a red carpet or have any celebrities in attendance.

The ceremony lacked the customary star-studded and rowdy atmosphere that usually ushers in the yearly movie awards season because of the pandemic still going strong and recent discoveries regarding the absence of diversity and suspected ethical violations among the awards’ organizers.

RRR And The Pride Of Indian Cinema
India had a memorable Golden Globes season this year because of the country’s first-ever nominations for the esteemed honor. The best original song and motion picture non-English categories both received nominations for Rajamouli’s monumental work, RRR.
In 2023, RRR ranked among the top and most popular Indian movies globally. Ram Charan and Jr. NTR feature in Rajamouli’s historical period drama, which is based on the true story of two Indian liberation fighters, Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem (Jr NTR). In addition to them, the film featured important roles for Alia Bhatt, Ajay Devgn, Shriya Saran, Olivia Morris, Ray Stevenson, and Alison Doody.
The film was visually stunning in the theatres and had a compelling plot, standout performances, and numerous technological accomplishments. RRR, India’s top contender at the Golden Globes, was defeated by Argentina in 1985 for the title of Best Motion Picture – Non-English.
The Best Original Song award has been given to RRR’s Naatu Naatu claiming it o be the RRR golden globe! M.M. Keeravani, the song’s composer, accepted the honor. Chandrabose was the writer of the lyrics. Team RRR at the Golden Globes, including SS Rajamouli, Ram Charan, Jr. NTR, and others, were overjoyed by the news.

“Naatu Naatu” was up against a great list of competitions like Carolina, Wakanda Forever soundtrack, etc.
The movie received a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film as well. Argentina defeated RRR in 1985 in the category for Best Non-English Language Film. Germany’s All Quiet on the Western Front, Belgium’s Close, and South Korea’s Decision to Leave were the other contenders in this category.
Director SS Rajamouli revealed, hours before RRR’s song “Naatu Naatu” won a Golden Globe for Best Song, how viewers helped the directors come up with the title because “RRR” wasn’t what they had in mind.
On Late Night with Seth Meyers, Rajamouli stated, “That (RRR) was not the title we had in mind. “We had to give out names to refer to the image when we announced that we (Rajamouli, Ram Charan, and NTR junior) would be working together. We just typed #RRR using the initials of our names, Rajamouli, Rama Rao, and Ram Charan.”
The victory was a welcome upset for a category that normally honors star power. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which hosts the award event, was the subject of a damning exposé that prompted a break and extensive reform, which is why the Golden Globes returned with a more diverse judging panel after a year off. The Hollywood Reporter highlighted that non-member voters, mostly foreign-based journalists, “may have contributed to tipping the balance in this election, among others.”

All in all, we in India are incredibly proud and joyous about this win and getting our cinematic world to be discovered and recognized by everyone else around the world. Many actors from the Indian Cinema celebrated this win as their own on social media, raising awareness and sending love to the whole team of RRR.
This RRR golden globe has made us realize the importance and the great success of Indian Cinema in the world and not only that, PM Narendra Modi took this celebration on Twitter and announced how happy and accomplished he felt by this win. A big step for Indian Cinema. A giant leap for a bigger one.
