After the MCD House was adjourned for the third time in a month without electing a mayor, the AAP leader Atishi announced on Monday that the party will move the Supreme Court to challenge the decision of the BJP to give voting rights to the aldermen. This comes after the municipal House of Delhi was adjourned for the third time in a month without electing a mayor.
“The last time, we withdrew our case against the BJP since, by that time, the dates for mayor polls had already been established, and it was also not apparent whether the nominated members would vote or not. However, today it is clear that they have illegally handed the Voting powers to aldermen. She announced that they would be challenging the judgement made by the BJP at the Supreme Court.

On Monday, the meeting of the House of MCD was adjourned without a mayor being elected for the third time in a month. A commotion broke out when it was decided to let the members who had been nominated to vote in the election for the seat. It is impossible to hold elections in this kind of environment. The meeting will resume at the appointed time and date, announced the officer in charge of presiding, Satya Sharma.
Presiding officer Satya Sharma stated, prior to the voting for electing the mayor at Municipal House in Delhi on Monday, that according to the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957, alderman are entitled to vote in the elections for mayor and deputy mayor. The polling took place at Municipal House.

In accordance with the Act, the Lieutenant Governor is permitted to propose 10 adults who are at least 25 years old for membership in the corporation so that they can provide assistance to the house in making decisions regarding matters of significant public interest. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has called foul, stating that procedural guidelines were breached by the LG in picking 10 BJP members as aldermen. These aldermen are likely to play a vital role in determining who controls the MCD, therefore the AAP has expressed its displeasure with the LG’s decision.
