On Wednesday, with less than 48 hours remaining until the Chandrayaan-3’s scheduled soft impact on the lunar surface, India will witness the final 20 minutes of utmost importance. If the mission is successful, India will join the United States, Russia, and China as the fourth nation to accomplish a soft landing on the Moon and will emerge as a space superpower.

According to reports citing experts, the final 20 minutes will be devoted to the spacecraft’s gentle touchdown. While ISRO mission scientists will programme the landing one day in advance, the final few minutes will be autonomous.

The ISRO announced on Tuesday that the Chandrayaan-3 mission, which is scheduled to soft-land on the lunar surface on August 23, is proceeding as planned. The space agency wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, “Systems are undergoing regular checks, and smooth sailing continues.”

ISRO also shared a video of moon images acquired by the Lander Position Detection Camera (LPDC) from an altitude of approximately 70 kilometres. “LPDC images assist the Lander Module in determining its position (latitude and longitude) by matching them against an onboard moon reference map,” stated the document.

Chandrayaan 3 lunar landing likely to be postponed?

According to a senior ISRO scientist, the national space agency will only attempt the landing if conditions are “favourable” on the scheduled date; otherwise, another attempt will be made on August 27.

“Two hours before Chandrayaan-3 descends on the Moon, a decision will be made based on the health of the lander module and the conditions on the Moon as to whether or not it is appropriate to land at that time. If any circumstance appears unfavourable, we will land the module on the Moon on August 27,” Nilesh M. Desai, director of ISRO’s Space Applications Centre, told the news agency ANI.
