China vows to take “resolute countermeasures” against Canada over expulsion of envoy

China has vehemently condemned and opposed Canada’s designation of a Chinese diplomat as “persona non grata” on Monday, the Chinese Embassy in Canada told the media.

China has vehemently condemned and opposed Canada’s designation of a Chinese diplomat as “persona non grata” on Monday, the Chinese Embassy in Canada told the media, The Chinese Embassy in Canada pledged to take “powerful and resolute countermeasures.”

The Chinese statement follows Canada’s announcement that it will expel Chinese diplomat Zhao Wei. Global Times, citing The Canadian Press, reported that Canada has accused Zhao Wei of involvement in a conspiracy to intimidate Conservative MP Michael Chong and his relatives in Hong Kong.

According to an intelligence report, he attempted to intimidate a Canadian lawmaker who was critical of China’s treatment of its Uyghur Muslim minority.

According to the Chinese Embassy in Canada, Ottawa’s actions violate international law, fundamental principles of international relations, and pertinent bilateral agreements between the two countries.

According to the Chinese Embassy, Beijing never interferes with the internal affairs of other nations. On the basis of ideological bias and political manipulation, it called the claim of “Chinese interference in Canadian domestic affairs” promoted by some legislators and the media “baseless and a blatant slander” against China.

The Chinese Embassy noted Canada’s action severely undermines the legitimate rights and interests of diplomatic and consular personnel in Beijing. After summoning the Chinese ambassador on Thursday and threatening to expel Chinese diplomatic and consular personnel, Canada has taken action.

According to the Chinese Embassy, Beijing’s diplomatic and consular personnel in Canada carried out their duties in accordance with applicable international conventions and bilateral agreements between the two countries.

In addition, it was stated that the Canadian government deliberately supports anti-China forces and targets Chinese consular officials. In addition, it was stated that China would never tolerate it. The Chinese Embassy urged the Canadian side to cease wrongdoing and “not continue down the incorrect path.”

Chinese diplomat Zhao Wei will be expelled from Canada, Foreign Minister Melanie Joly announced in a statement, in response to a national outcry over allegations of political interference. However, Beijing has vehemently denied any election meddling, labeling the allegations “completely baseless and defamatory.”

“Canada has decided to declare Mr. Zhao Wei persona non grata,” Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said in a statement.

“We will not tolerate any form of foreign interference in our internal affairs. Diplomats in Canada have been warned that they will be expelled if they engage in this type of conduct,” she added.

This decision was made after meticulous consideration of all relevant factors. We remain steadfast in our conviction that protecting our democracy is of the uttermost importance,” read the statement.

According to media reports, this development occurs after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced in March of this year that an independent special rapporteur would investigate allegations of Chinese interference in recent Canadian elections.

According to the report, the development follows weeks of outrage in Canada sparked by revelations, first reported by the Globe and Mail, that the Canadian Security Intelligence Service discovered an accredited Chinese diplomat in the country targeted opposition leader Michael Chong and his relatives in China in response to his criticisms of Beijing’s treatment of its Uyghur minorities.
