Narendra Modi criticized the Ashok Gehlot-led Congress administration in Udaipur Rajasthan on Monday for beheading Kanhaiya Lal on June 28, 2017.
“What occurred in Udaipur was beyond anyone’s wildest imagination… People come under the guise of having their clothing mended, and then slit the throats of tailors without fear or dread… Even in this circumstance, Congress saws a vote bank. In an election-bound rally in Chhittugarh, Rajasthan, the prime minister asked the Congress party, “What did the Congress party do during the Udaipur tailor murders? They played vote-bank politics…”
Modi had referenced the murder of Kanhaiya Lal in the state capital of Jaipur last week. “How can investment occur in an environment where throat-slitting incidents occur and the government is powerless? This was not an ordinary offense; it was the result of vote-bank appeasement politics in Congress, he stated.
Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal was executed in an ISIS-style decapitation by Riyaz Attari and Ghous Mohammed in retaliation for his social media post supporting suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s alleged remarks against Prophet Mohammed. The duo captured the murder on their cell phones and uploaded the footage to social media. A video in which they threatened Prime Minister Modi went viral. The pair was apprehended hours after the murder.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) charged eleven individuals, including two Pakistanis, under the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) in December of last year.
According to the NIA indictment, the investigation pointed to a conspiracy involving eleven suspects who were members of a terror cell and were radicalized by incriminating material circulated from within and outside the country.
Riyaz Attari is allegedly affiliated with the Karachi-based radical organization Dawat-e-Islami. The second murderer, Ghous Mohammed, was summoned to Pakistan in 2014 by senior Dawat officials.
