In a speech written by ChatGPT, an Australian lawmaker says AI could cause “mass destruction.”

ChatGPT, a new dialogue-based chatbot that debuted in November, has been the topic of every internet talk for its conversational skill. People have been asking various questions to the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot in a lighthearted and light manner in order to test the tool’s skills and capability.
Now, Australia’s federal Labor MP Julian Hill has used what is believed to be the first Australian parliamentary speech part-written by ChatGPT to warn that AI could be exploited for “global catastrophe”. According to The Guardian, on Monday, the congressman called for a white paper or an investigation into all of the “risks and advantages” of AI, which he claimed might lead to school cheating, disinformation, and uncontrollable military applications, among other issues.
Mr Hill used ChatGPT prompts including “please summarise recent media reports about students using artificial intelligence in Australia to cheat and explain why teachers are worried about this” and “explain in 2 minutes the risks and benefits to Australia from artificial general intelligence” to compose sections of the speech.
“AI technology, such as smart software that can compose essays and produce answers, is becoming increasingly accessible to students, allowing them to complete projects and examinations without truly understanding the topic,” Mr Hill told the House of Representatives.
Further, as per the site, the lawmakers warned that kids might be “essentially circumventing the educational process and getting an unfair advantage” while professors are unable to “detect and address cheating” – before revealing “I have to admit I didn’t write that”.

Mr Hill also cautioned about the potential for job loss, arguing that artificial general intelligence “may perpetuate existing biases and discrimination” and “might be exploited for evil objectives, such as cyber-attacks and disinformation operations”.
Mr Hill emphasised that artificial intelligence has the ability to “change combat as we know it,” with “severe” implications for national security. He contended that if artificial general intelligence “outperforms human intelligence,” it could represent a threat to our military, potentially leaving our current defensive capabilities obsolete.

Starting in 2023, the lawmaker proposed a “concerted, serious, urgent policy think,” such as a white paper, an inquiry, a permanent commission, international collaboration, or any mix of these. But he also praised AI’s “potential to change several industries, including healthcare, transportation and finance by enhancing efficiency, decreasing costs and improving decision-making”.
