Badal dies. President Murmu, PM Modi lead tributes

The passing of senior statesman Parkash Singh Badal was mourned by political figures from all sides, who offered their condolences.Parkash Singh Badal, who had been confined to a private hospital in Mohali, passed away on Tuesday.

Parkash Singh Badal was a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) veteran and five-time chief minister of Punjab, and resident Prime Minister Narendra Modi eulogized him as a titan of Indian politics.

Tuesday, Badal died at a private hospital in Mohali at the age of 95.

Badal, who was born in Muktsar on December 8, 1927, has been in the intensive care unit (ICU) since Saturday. At the age of 20, he was elected village sarpanch, and in 1957, he was elected as an MLA for the first time on a Congress ticket. In 1970, at the age of 43, he became the chief minister of Punjab for the first time.

In his career, Parkash Singh Badal ran for and won 11 state assembly elections. Between 1969 and 2017, he won ten consecutive elections.

The demise of the veteran leader was condoled by leaders of all political stripes.

The President of India tweeted, “Sri Parkash Singh Badal was one of the most prominent political figures since independence. His exemplary public service career was primarily confined to Punjab, but he was respected throughout the nation. His demise leaves a vacuum. My deepest condolences to his loved ones and admirers.”

Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar remarked, “The passing of Shri Parkash Singh Badal Ji is a tremendous loss for Punjab and the nation.” His extraordinary leadership, vision, and unwavering commitment to the welfare of the people will forever be remembered. In this time of sorrow, my thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends. Om Shanti!”

“Extremely saddened by the passing of Shri Parkash Singh Badal Ji,” tweeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He was a titan of Indian politics and a remarkable statesman who made significant contributions to our nation. He labored tirelessly for the advancement of Punjab and served as a pillar for the state during difficult times.”

Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh remarked, “Badal Sahab was a native who never lost touch with his origins. I recall favorably my interactions with him on multiple issues.

I am devastated by his passing. His passing is a personal tragedy for me. My deepest sympathies go out to his bereaved family and supporters. Om Shanti!”

Union law minister Kiren Rijiju expressed condolences for Badal’s passing. He tweeted, “My profound condolences on the passing of Padma Vibhushan Parkash Singh Badal, former Punjab chief minister and patriarch of the Shiromani Akali Dal. His soul shall dwell in peace. Om Shanti.”

Congressman Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “The news of the passing of former Punjab chief minister and Shiromani Akali Dal president Sardar Parkash Singh Badal is sorrowful. He was a lifelong political leader in India and Punjab. I offer my sincere condolences to his bereaved family and supporters, including Mr. Sukhbir Singh Badal.”

Chief Minister of Punjab Bhagwant Mann tweeted, “Received the tragic news of former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s passing… May Waheguru place the soul of the deceased at his feet and grant the family the fortitude to endure the loss.Wahe Guru, Wahe Guru”.

NCP leader Supriya Sule stated, “I am deeply grieved to learn of the passing of former Punjab chief minister and eminent leader Parkash Singh Badal sahab. He was a highly competent administrator and a true guide and example for all of us. Everyone will mourn him. Sincere condolences to the Badal family, including Harsimrat and Sukhbir.

Majinder Singh Sirsa, a leader of the BJP, tweeted, “A father-like figure. For every Punjabi. The individual who fought for prosperity and harmony in Punjab. Unforgettable. Unmatched. Parkash Singh Badal Ji. May the blessings of Waheguru be upon his spirit”

Captain Amarinder Singh, former chief minister of Punjab, tweeted, “Deeply grieved by the passing of S. Parkash Singh Badal. Sincere condolences to @officeofssbadal and the entire Badal family. Badal Sahab was respected by all, regardless of political affiliation. May Waheguru ji bestow the soul of the deceased peace.”
