Hours after the central government increased the price of commercial liquid petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders by 350.50 per unit and domestic LPG cylinders by 50 per unit, a 2011 tweet from union minister Smriti Irani in which she criticised the then-Congress government for increasing the LPG price by 50 resurfaced on social media.

Soon thereafter, Congress circulated an old photograph of the union minister protesting the price increase and questioned whether she would “still take to the streets.”

“When an LPG cylinder cost less than 400 rupees, Smriti Irani sat on the road with it. Today, the price of a cylinder has surpassed 1,100; will she do so today?,” the party asked on its Twitter account.

Youth Congress chief Shrinivas BV also shared an old video of the minister from a 2011 press conference, when the BJP was in opposition and the Youth Congress was in power. The video includes a text band that reads, “Gas cylinder prices have surpassed $1,100; where is Cylinderella?”

On Wednesday morning, petroleum and oil marketing companies immediately increased the price of LPG cylinders. The non-subsidised LPG price per 14.2 kg cylinder was raised to 1,103 – the first increase since July 2022.

In Delhi, commercial LPG cylinders will now cost 2,119.50 per unit, a 19.8% increase from 1,769, while domestic LPG cylinders will cost 1,103 per unit, an increase of 4.7% from 1,006.
