An idol of Lord Hanuman was vandalized early Monday morning in Sahibganj, Jharkhand, according to media reports citing an official. A person has been detained in connection with the incident.
According to Sahibganj deputy commissioner Ramniwas Yadav, the 1.5-foot-tall idol is located in a temple beneath a tree in the Sahibganj town police station area, 425 kilometers from Ranchi. As news of the incident spread in the morning, locals and right-wing activists congregated near the temple and blocked the road for approximately one hour, demanding that the perpetrator be apprehended.
The media quoted Sahibganj’s deputy commissioner as saying, “There is a Hanuman temple near Patel Chowk where antisocial elements engaged in mischief. We have recovered the CCTV footage and are currently verifying it. Some individuals have been identified and will be questioned. The District Administration will take stern action against them.”
The media reports that the police used the stick to disperse the assembly. As a precaution, the administration reportedly suspended internet services during the day.
Yadav stated, “The man was detained by police, and he is being thoroughly interrogated. “The situation in the city is under control. As a precaution, we have suspended internet service for 24 hours beginning Monday morning at 9:00 a.m.,” he added.
The superintendent of police in Sahibganj, Anuranjan Kispotta, informed the media that security forces have been deployed and the situation is under control.
He stated, “The idol was repaired and returned to its original location.”
A senior police officer was injured during a confrontation between two communities during the immersion of a Durga idol in the town of Sahibganj on Saturday.
