Amritpal Singh, the leader of the Waris Punjab De, is on the run and Punjab cops has been placed on high alert in advance of Baisakhi.
Due to the state being on high alert for Baishakhi — the new year celebration — all punjab cops’ leaves have been canceled until April 14. Amritpal Singh, a fugitive radical Sikh leader, has urged Shri Akal Takht Sahib to convene a “Sarbat Khalsa” to discuss Sikh concerns. Thursday, Akal Takhth jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh issued a statement announcing a three-day gathering at Takht Damdama Sahib to celebrate Baisakhi.
“There is a significant distinction between the annual congregation and the ‘Sarbat Khalsa’. This is a Baisakhi celebration,” an official told HT, indicating that the Akal Takht is not truly granting Amritpal Singh’s demand for Sarbat Khalsa.
Waris Punjab De leader Amritpal Singh has been on the run since March 18, despite releasing two videos and one audio clip from concealment. It was also speculated that he would surrender prior to Baisakhi at the Golden Temple or any shrine.
The Punjab cops have not confirmed Amritpal Singh’s surrender, but they have previously stated that there are ample security measures in place at public locations. Friday, as rumors of Amritpal Singh’s possible capitulation resurfaced, the Punjab cops stated that the surrender rumors are false.

Amritpal Singh did not allude at surrender in his messages to his followers; rather, he stated that he would have surrendered if the Punjab police had come to his home to arrest him. However, the Punjab police pursued him and detained a number of Sikh youth.
