India ranks 1st with 24% of global milk production: Union minister

Union Minister said that the milk production of India has registered a fifty-one per cent increase during the last eight years- during the year 2014-15 and 2021-22

Parshottam Rupala, the Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairy, stated in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that milk production of India will contribute 24% of the world’s milk output in the years 2021–2022.

According to production figures from the Food and Agriculture Organization Corporate Statistical Database (FAOSTAT), India will produce 24% of the world’s milk in 2021–2022, the minister stated in a written response to a question in the Lok Sabha.

Furthermore, he said that over the past eight years, between the years 2014–15 and 2021–22, India’s milk output has climbed by 51 percent, reaching a total of 22 crore tonnes.

The minister added that a number of programmes are administered by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying for the benefit of its farmer members, especially dairy farmers who are struggling financially.

The National Program for Dairy Development also seeks to increase organised milk procurement, processing, value addition, and marketing while also raising the quality of milk and milk products.

The Intensive Dairy Development Programme, Strengthening Infrastructure for Quality and Clean Milk Production, and Assistance to Cooperatives were combined to form the NPDD, which was introduced in February 2014.

To improve the quality of milk and milk products and increase the share of organised procurement, processing, value addition, and marketing, NPDD was restructured in July 2021. This restructuring will take effect between 2021–2022 and 2025–2026.

The minister asserted that the country’s milk production climbed from 146.31 million tonnes in 2014–15 to 221.1 million tonnes as a result of the department’s implementation of these programmes.
