Chandigarh: Husband, in-laws arrested for suicide abetment

Chandigarh police have arrested the woman’s spouse as well as her in-laws on charges of aiding and abetting the suicide of a 22-year-old woman. It is reported that the victim was harassed for dowry purposes.

Sunday, a day after a 22-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide at her home in Ram Darbar, Chandigarh, her husband and her in-laws were arrested for assisting in the suicide.

The victim, who married in December of last year, reportedly hanged herself in her in-laws’ home.

Her spouse discovered her hanging, after which he alerted the authorities.

The victim was rushed to GMCH-32, where she was pronounced deceased upon arrival.

The police arrested her spouse and her in-laws after receiving a complaint from the deceased’s mother. According to the complainant, the deceased’s in-laws harassed her for dowry.

Sector-31 police have filed a report under Sections 306 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.

Six people, including five males, took their own lives between Friday and Saturday.

In the remaining five cases reported between Friday and Saturday, police initiated inquests.

On Saturday, a 34-year-old man purportedly committed suicide by hanging himself in Maloya.

On Saturday, a 28-year-old man was discovered hanging in his home in Manimajra.

On Friday, three suicides were reported, including the death by hanging of a 38-year-old male in Mori Gate, Manimajra. Due to a family issue, a man of 25 years old took the extreme action in Milk Colony. A 65-year-old man committed suicide by hanging himself in his Sector 15 home due to melancholy in a separate incident.
