New Delhi: The nominations for the 95th Academy Awards have been released, and RRR has been nominated for an Oscars (one of three for Indian cinema) for Best Original Song for Naatu Naatu, which also won a Golden Globe in the same category. Applause from Tell It Like A Woman, Lady Gaga’s Hold My Hand from Top Gun: Maverick, Rihanna’s Lift Me Up from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and This Is A Life from Everything Everywhere All At Once are the other nominated songs. Taylor Swift’s Carolina from Where the Crawdads Sing, which was nominated for a Golden Globe, a notable omission.
Two Indian-produced films have also been nominated for Oscars: All That Breathes for Best Documentary Feature Film and The Elephant Whisperers for Best Documentary Short. Chhello Show or Last Picture Show, India’s official Oscar entry, was left off the final slate in the Best International Feature Film category.

RRR and the documentaries join a small handful of Indian films that have been nominated for Oscars, including Mother India, Salaam Bombay, and Lagaan for Best International Feature Film. If Naatu Naatu composer MM Keeravaani wins an Oscar in addition to his Golden Globe, he will join a group of Indian Oscar winners that includes Bhanu Athaiya, who won Best Costume Design for Gandhi, and AR Rahman, Gulzar, and sound engineer Resul Pookutty, who won Oscars for their work in Slumdog Millionaire, a British-made film set in India.
